Jesus was totally named Jeshua, or Joshua. But the son of God couldn't be sharing his name with a bunch of other Biblical people. He had to have an entirely new name.
Jesus is the Greek form of Yeshua, which is the Hebrew form of Joshua. So he was called Yeshua by his bros, but when they sat down to write the gospels years and years later, they wrote them in Greek and used that version of his name.
and god didn't knock up Mary … Gabriel delivered a (presumably either still warm or fast-frozen) sample of genetic material to the young lady's ear. Er … guess the birth of Yeshua really was a miracle.
